Permanent Wave
Literally for centuries, women and men have been looking for ways to effectively alter their hair to get a new look. One of the most effective ways to change the hair is to do so using a permanent wave. A perm is a method of chemically retexturing the hair to give it a whole new look.
What is a Permanent Wave Hair Style?
A permanent wave, or perm, is a hair styling process that involves the use of chemicals to break and reform the bonds of the hair. The process is typically implemented to add additional texture to the hair in the form of curls or waves.
How is It Done?
To achieve the most natural looking and feeling style, the process must be completed very strategically. To begin, the hair is typically washed and conditioned to prepare it for the treatment. Following the washing, the hair is separated into sections and wrapped onto multiple perm rods. After the hair has been wrapped, a waving lotion or perming solution is applied throughout the hair. The solution causes a chemical reaction in the hair, softening the inner structure by breaking some of the cross links within the proteins of the hair.
After the perm sets, the perming solution is rinsed out of the hair and a neutralizing solution is applied. After treatment, the perm typically needs to render for 24 to 48 hours without washing, brushing, or styling. After this time period has passed, the hair can be washed and styled as normal, taking special care not to damage the hair.
What are the Benefits?
Many people decide to perm their hair merely to add some extra curl to it. However, perming the hair involves more than just curling it. In reality there are a number of benefits to getting a perm, including:
- Added curl or wave, depending on the type of perm
- More volume in the hair
- Reduced styling time
- Completely different style options
- Appearance of thicker, fuller hair
Things to Consider
Just as the name suggests, perms are a permanent change to the hair at least for an extended period of time. As such, it is important to consider several things before committing to a perm. When deciding on a perm, individuals need to consider:
- The duration of a perm
- Potential damage to hair
- The desired style (spiral, body, wave)
- The added care
A permanent wave hairstyle is one of the most effective ways to change up a style. Such a change can actually make the hair appear thicker, fuller, and healthier than any other style option.
